Safe Sleep and SIDS Awareness Month
October is Safe Sleep and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Awareness Month!
Although the rates of SIDS and other sleep-related infant deaths have decreased over the years, we still have work to do.
More than 1 out of 3 of sudden unexpected infant deaths that occur in the United States each year are from SIDS.1 Recent research also shows that unsafe bedding, such as soft or loose blankets in a baby’s sleep area, remains a leading cause of infant death.2
This month, NCPPC and our friends at Samaritan Medical Center and Carthage Area Hospital Maternity are encouraging safe infant sleep practices by distributing safe sleep bundles to every family who welcomes a new baby. Each bundle includes a safe sleep bag, NCPPC baby beanie, Sleep Baby Safe and Snug book, and brochures with tips, information, and safety checklists.
This project was partially supported with funds from Heartbeats for Madden.
