Pinwheels of Possibility: Celebrating Child Abuse Prevention Month
April is National Child Abuse Prevention (CAP) Month, a time when child wellness and welfare organizations across the United States shine a spotlight on the importance of centering families and building communities where children can grow up safe, healthy, and supported.
Healthy Families Jefferson/Lewis & St. Lawrence, along with NCPPC, recognizes that every community member has a role in ensuring children have positive experiences and that families have the resources they need, even before crises arise. This year’s awareness and impact campaign, led by Prevent Child Abuse America and its national network of state chapters, is themed “Pinwheels of Possibility.”
The pinwheel represents how family support should work. Families are at the center, and each spin stands for the programs, services, policies, and everyday kindnesses that help them stay strong.
From home visiting and health care to economic stability and safe housing, every pathway of support helps expand what’s possible for children and families.
In this moment, as families are facing rising costs, heightened stress, and widening gaps in support, we must be clear in our message and actions- when we support families early and often, children are more likely to grow up safe, healthy, and ready to thrive.
We must work toward a mindset shift—from a culture that looks for problems to report to one that offers help, trust, and connection. When families are valued and supported, prevention becomes possible.
Healthy Families Jefferson/Lewis & St. Lawrence and NCPPC invite community members to raise awareness and impact through the following action items this April and beyond:
- Wear blue: Wear Blue to show support for children and families as we build momentum and carry our message throughout CAP Month. Post a photo or video on social media and include the #WearBlueDay2026 hashtag.
- Become familiar with local resources that support families and connect caregivers who could use a little help. NCPPC offers two home visiting programs—Healthy Families and Community Health Worker, two Family Resource Centers—in Watertown and Gouverneur, Healthy Insurance Navigators, Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians, a Cribs for Kids Safe Sleep program, the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, and certified babysitting courses.
- Participate in one of NCPPC’s Triple-P Positive Parenting or Circle of Security parenting workshops.
- Attend NCPPC’s Spring Market on May 2 at Garland City (321 Howk St, Watertown, NY), a fundraiser to support our chapter of the Imagination Library.
Pinwheels of Possibility celebrates the limitless potential of children and families when communities, systems, and policies come together to keep families strong before a crisis occurs. Together, we can strengthen families at every turn and ensure every child has the chance to grow up safe, supported, and loved.
