Community-Based Education
NCPPC offers several training and professional development opportunities in support of our mission.
Youth and Adult Mental Health First Aid
Mental Health First Aid is a course that teaches you how to help someone who is developing a mental health challenge or is experiencing a mental health crisis. The training helps you identify, understand, and respond to signs of addiction and mental illness.
Adult
Community-Based Education
The Adult Mental Health First Aid course is appropriate for anyone age 18 and older who wants to learn how to help a person who may be experiencing a mental health or substance use related challenge or crisis.
Youth
Community-Based Education
The Youth Mental Health First Aid course is primarily intended for adults to learn how to help young people experiencing mental health challenges or crises. It reviews the unique risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems in adolescents ages 12-18 and emphasizes the importance of early intervention.
Both full-day courses are highly interactive and led by certified facilitators.
Trauma/Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Education
ACEs and trauma have a tremendous impact on physical and mental health, educational and occupational success, and the development of healthy social skills and coping mechanisms. They also have a notable impact on the community as a whole. This training can be crafted to meet your needs to provide information on how trauma and ACEs affect development and future outcomes for individuals, impact on the community, and different strategies that can be used to attempt to lessen the effect of ACEs.
Adolescent Sexual Health Education
Presentations on a variety of topics related to adolescent sexual health including puberty, communication, dating and relationships, birth control, and pregnancy can be crafted to meet your needs.
Safe Zone
This training is for individuals and organizations to increase awareness of the unique needs of people who identify as LGBTQ+. Within the training participants will have the opportunity to consider current practices and how they could be adapted to create a more welcoming and accepting environment for LGBTQ+ individuals.
Red Cross Babysitting Course
Red Cross Babysitting Courses prepare youth ages 11-16 to safely and confidently care for children and infants. It includes hands-on activities, videos, and discussions to develop essential, real-life readiness babysitting skills. The course covers feeding, diapering, picking up and holding children, safety and emergency response. Youth will also have the opportunity to learn additional skills that can help save a life, such as first aid and CPR. Upon successful completion, youth will earn a two-year certification in Pediatric and Child First AID and CPR.
School-Based Education
We believe youth development programming and comprehensive sexuality education are critical to helping adolescents make healthy choices. Our programs partner with schools, health services, and a range of community organizations to provide youth ages 10-21 with the tools and resources needed to grow into healthy adults.
Comprehensive Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention (CAPP)
The CAPP program focuses on pregnancy prevention and the promotion of sexual health among adolescents ages 10 to 21, including those pregnant and parenting. We partner with local school districts to provide age-appropriate, medically accurate, non-biased, sexual health education to students in Health classes to meet New York State Health Education Standards. Evidence-based and promising practice programs include Be Proud Be Responsible, Making Proud Choices, Safe Dates, Girls Circle, and Me Too!
CAPP Sexual Health Educators are available to meet with adolescents one-on-one to discuss decision making, healthy choices, and complete referrals. In addition, our CAPP educators work with LGBTQ+ young people by co-facilitating Gender and Sexuality Alliances in schools and volunteering with community groups.
